About SmartEng Tools

SmartEng Tools is a personal, independent educational project about computer engineering: RISC-V, computer architecture and digital logic.

What problem it tries to solve

Computer architecture and digital electronics courses have recurring exercises: encoding and decoding instructions, following the execution of an assembly program, counting pipeline cycles or simplifying a function with a Karnaugh map. You learn them by doing them, but it is hard to check whether a result is right without a teacher at hand. The site offers explanations with worked examples, exercises that check themselves and tools to verify any case of your own.

How the content is built

  • The figures in the lessons (field tables, cycle diagrams and Karnaugh maps) are generated with the same code as the tools, so the explanation and the tool cannot give different results.
  • Exercises do not store answers: they are checked in your browser by running the corresponding tool’s algorithm.
  • Each tool explains what it models and what it does not. The details are on the methodology page.
  • Claims that depend on a specification or a textbook link their source at the end of each page. Each guide shows the date it was last reviewed.

What it means that the tools run in your browser

Calculations (decoding, simulating, minimizing) are done with JavaScript on your device. What you type into a tool is not sent to any server to compute the result. Some tools, such as the decoder or the student calculators, keep your last input in the browser’s local storage so you do not lose it on reload; you can clear it from your browser settings.

That does not mean the site collects no data at all: it shows Google AdSense ads and uses Vercel visit statistics. The privacy policy explains which data is processed and how to manage consent.

Other tools

The site keeps from earlier versions some calculators that are not part of the computer engineering syllabus: required exam score, ECTS average, compound interest, FIRE target, portfolio rebalancing and a festival clash finder. They remain available, each with its model and limitations described, but they are not the focus of the project.

Who maintains it

It is a personal project. The legal notice lists the site owner and its contact email. There is no editorial team or external reviewers: if you find an error in a result or an explanation, the way to get it fixed is to report it through the contact page.
